Dauntless, rear deck bottles?

Post by scorpiomikey »

So im building the Italeri (Accurate Miniatures) 1/48 SBD-5, and in the rear cockpit, on the floor, there are 2 bottles sunk into the deck. Im having a hard time finding any photographic reference to these.
Other modelers have painted them a range of colours from red, green, yellow etc.
Can anyone actually confirm for me what these are, or what colour they should be?
Thanks!

I have the SBD Detail & Scale book, I can look there to check. Where in the rear cockpit are these bottles?

This is somebody elses build of the same kit. Credit goes to Stephen Sutton for a great build.

Its the 2 in the very foreground that are out of focus.

The shorter one on the left side of the aircraft is a fire extinguisher bottle, red. The larger one on the right side is an oxygen bottle- green (not zinc chromate, but a similar Medium Green). There will also be another in the front cockpit to the pilots right. And each also has a boxed shaped apparatus that is green on the sidewalk next to the oxygen bottles.

For the Bottle Green, that is/was the same Green as Willow/Light Green. The color code is the same today. 14187, or whatever color you decide to use for it, it is the same one as the stripes and cowl trim colors for the Green Flight in the yellow wings era. (you probably have a decal sheet with that color on it for use as your "paint chip" to help you decide)

It is one of the International agreed colors for weapons, and other gear, for easy identification and safety.

Rex, did the Navy ever use Yellow for oxygen bottles? I'm pretty sure that the AAF and AF did/do... :hmm:

I'm pretty sure there's nothing on them in the book...I believe one is an oxygen bottle and the other is a fire extinguisher...

Stik, I am not too much "up on" things before 1946. 1946 to the present being the "tail code era" and my main area of interest.

The early, non-standardized stuff, such as Yellow for Oxy or the early war Yellow bombs are the sorts of things that I get by asking the WW II guys, on a case by case basis.

So, for doing the lone SBD or SB2U, etc,,,,I am the guy asking the experts.

Awesome. Thanks guys.
As far as that green goes, i dont have a colour chip for it. The kit i have shipped with decals for the blue on off white era. Ill most likely be doing it up as an RNZAF aircraft. (Cos you know, kiwi lol)
From what i can see online that green is a fairly bright green?
