Spitfire Cockpit

Anyone know what color the cockpit of the Spitfire Vb was? It says cockpit green (Humbrol) but it looks like a dark green.

RAF cockpits, except on night mission aircraft, were cockpit green until postwar when they went to black. They were not like the USAAF with a variety of colors in use during the war.

What's the closest to Cockpit Green? Not sure if I have that.

Tamiya Cockpit Green is close. Model Master makes (or made) the color in enamel and acrylic, SAC Bomber Green is close in color. It is a medium to light grayish green. I think the Humbrol code is 78.

Hi Medic,

Carlos is indeed right - the cockpit of a Vb would most likely have been cockpit green. Humbrol 78 is quite a good match from what I've seen of bits of real aircraft - Tamyia do one too but I can't remember the number. I think it's quite well thought off.

Spitfire cockpits tended to be all green early on in the war, but later on switched to a half green/half black scheme to reduce glare. Post war marks such as the 22/24 were generally all black.
