Wingnut Wings 1/32 Avro Lancaster B.Mk.1/III Pt.2

Sorry guys, but it seems with my last reply I killed the second page of the original thread. Annoying, that is.
But anyways, here's what I wrote:
speedgraflex wrote: Torben, often I wish you built 1/32 aircraft. Some day I would like to ask why specific scales are chosen... but it was brought to my attention that a chosen scale for a modeler is not simply an honorific but a singularity. One might as well blame a compass for pointing north as question a chosen scale. I do feel there are exceptions (or I’m following a long, lonely road), but I find 1/32 to be comfortable for me but not always as full of component choices as 1/48... and what about 1/24? There’s definitely a large scale movement afoot with cars. I wonder if aircraft will be next? Your banker sounds a smart man to me!
I'm an aircraft builder in first place and I'm very much tempted by the big scale. When I came back to the hobby I played around with a bunch of kits in all kind of scales. When I made the decision that I want to step into that modeling thing on a higher level I had a vision of building a collection of model airplanes in one scale. I wanted them to be compareble to each other, because one thing that fascinates me about planes is their variability in size.
So I did a lot of research. Which scale has the most diversity and the most esoteric, fancy stuff? 1/72, for sure. Which scale offers the most potential in details and overall realizm? 1/32 and bigger, we know that. And then there's the scale that's, in my opinion, the compromise between the advantages of the before mentioned scales. So I started my first serious build and my collection in 1/48. Eight years since then and I'm perfectly okay with it. How I quench my thirst for bigger parts, more details? I switched to armor in 1/35 and try out new techniques on that field. It's a way that works for me but of course it hurts sometimes. Especially when I take a look at those WnW kits that are blinkin' at me like a styrene made Gal Gadot. But hey, I'm a tough guy -lol!

Bruce, to answer your flattering knocks on my wip-doors lately: I'm back on the bench after a summer of nearly no bench time at all and there will be updates

I love the cats!

And I thoroughly agree upon your reasoning for standardizing aircraft in 1/48 and armor in 1/35. I made much the same decision 30 some odd years ago when I decided which way that my modeling hobby was going to go.

On a side note, this is happening more than once on the site lately where a reply locks up a thread. It never happened before the last “upgrade”. Although I did go back to 1/32 while in deployment since I knew that those builds would not be coming back with me, so display space was not a worry. And all I can say about the new 1/32 aircraft kits compared to the old ones of yesteryear is “wow”.

Thank you so much for your reply, Torben—a very sound line of reasoning for why 1/48 is a great choice for model building, not simply for you but for many others as well.

I will have to think about what you wrote concerning a uniform context of subjects at the same scale. I have this black magic / force user sense that most of the subjects have a sweet spot scale factor. I found the magic for the Mustang resonated visually at 1/32 "International Scale." Part of this sense may stem from he Monogram version in 1/32 (One day, yes). I also have to affirm that this could be driven by marketing campaign as well! Zoukei-Mura and Tamiya make outstanding 1/32 Mustang kits marketed as a sensory experience (What you term the "Seduction of Styrene"!) which is hard to shake once you start believing the marketing campaigns. Revell now has their outstanding 1/32 Mustang kit at less than half the price of those—in a very well-reasoned contest between makers of 1/32 Mustangs it will be very very VERY interesting to begin RoG after thoroughly enjoying the Seventies thick and thin plastic of Hasegawa's version.

I thought the Trimaster 1/48 versions of the Anton, Dora and Ta 152 represented a visual nirvana (Seduction again) in terms of the well-proportioned, sweet spot models of butcher birds; and I believe Jerry Crandall still stocks these kits on his website, too, but you and Kent kicked a hole the size of Czechoslovakia into the idea of a long lost out of production kit being superior to the new flash versions being made today. I recently bought a Revell Anton simply because of Henri's mind-blowing propeller models! I had to chase the rabbit over the hill and down the dale into 1/32 scale.

Ultimately, as Carlos wisely asserts—scale is very much personal choice—and I am grateful for your response!

The 1/32 kits of 4 engine bombers are tempting but I'm afraid I'd have to add on to my house for building room and take out a loan to purchase the kit and all the paint. I doubt I could slip that by my wife. Also at my age I don't want to get into a long term project. I don't even take long naps for the same reason. The detailing on that Lancaster looks fantastic.

Very sound reasoning, WJKunert. I want to build those engines, though. Both versions. The engines could be models unto themselves and most satisfying to build. However, what you wrote about time, energy and cash makes a lot of sense to me.

For the admins / mods:

As this is now the second time, in pretty recent time, a thread "freezes"...

Is there any helpdesk / support from the service provider who could release the "constipation" for whatever locked the thread ?

Speaking as a typical 1/48 scale aircraft builder, who occasionally builds up a 1/32 piece, I can say it's really a display space issue. I love the 1/32 size, but would quickly run out of space to put them when they're done. I'm nearing the finish of a 1/24 Thunderbolt and can easily say it's way too clunky to work with- plus it's so heavy the wing joins don't seem strong enough. My biggest fear is trying to sit it on the provided gear...I'm praying it doesn't collapse!

Hi Kari! I feel certain Torben will be looking into the cause, but we all will follow along to find out why this is happening.

Yup... On the first Lancaster thread, I can click on first page but when you want to go to second page? No luck. It keeps loading but doesn't takes you there.
