Since there were only 1,000 AIM-9Ds produced, that is most likely a -9G (approx 2,000) or even a -9H (approx 7,000) on the inner pylon.

The Sparrows would be AIM-7E-2 by that time.

Centerline tank is the 600 gallon. (the three wing tank types were all 370 gallon)

Note that there are no pylons on the outerwing in the second photo. (...)

I was looking at this thread, in order to try and pick up where I left off. In the process I realized why so many of the "Phantom Guides" online wind up stopping at some point in them.

There are so many parts that could be glued together, and in so many different combos, sometimes for the same BuNo in different years, that it would take almost the whole ~5000 in order to cover them all. Since a lot of the Phantom kits out there share the same basic fuselage parts for the range that that model company makes, there is even a whole bunch of "fill this panel line with putty" and "make sure you add this panel line" to your model, that even that "simple thing" is a whole can of worms by itself.

I'm finding the same thing with the Skyhawk model and version list that I am doing.

Best I can think of as a way to do this, is to mention the parts, illustrate them, and advise the modeler to "check his photos" to see if his F-4B or F-4J, etc, needs that part or not.

Funny... I have been looking over lots of various F-4G & F-4E walkarounds the past few weeks (as well as the MB Mk.7 seats) for my current Weasel project. Lets just say I am finding all sorts of variation simply by timeframe, not including by nationality.

My main problem is that my notes are set up by modeling project, not by real aircraft type.

So, they don't say "F-4B had tail tips like this, this, or this",,,,,,instead they say that project number 9696h (Wolfpak # 72-060, option 8) is VW-3 153006 from VMFA-314 and had the "double bump" tail (AN/APR-32 on the leading edge and AN/APR-25 on the trailing edge), non-slotted stabs, and the AN/APR-32 nose sensor. It also did not have the trunion cover "bumps" on the wings. And then which photo in which book matches the config on that decal sheet. And then whether they had McDonnell, Sgt Fletcher, or Royal Jet wing tanks, and any armament configs that fit that same time period for that unit.

I have about 3/4 of my entire planned collection noted like the above, so I can figure out if I need to make more of each kind of detail part or not.

Wow, this Thread has my head spinning.....

Makes me glad I've pretty well finished all Phantom builds for my air forces. They may not be accurate, but they all done and I'm just thrilled to be able to move on.

Finished? With Phantoms?

I can't imagine ever being finished doing those. I have had one or more continuously on my bench for about 44 years. (except for one time that I had to do 12 Skyhawks for a base display, that is)

I'm always finding more that I want to do, considering all the variations that are possible. That is just the markings, let alone the detail differences.

Exactly... nationalities, services, paint schemes, version evolutions... In your chosen scale they do not take up much room (unlike that big 32nd scale beast that I am currently working on)...
