Re: An Invitation
I'll chime in more often with critiques here. Hopefully with a proper amount of tact. But I also will echo Mark's view of a FB page separate from here. That has a very real risk of drawing away members from here. The AMPS Chapter where Mark and I are both members has two web pages. A proboards site where only a handful of us post, and a FB page that has the lions share of activity. Both are run by the same member. If your critique FB page takes off Jim, I really do hope that it is not at the expense of this place.

I've joined Jim's FB-group yesterday and it's fun. But not a competitor time wise for me. Because it is not a classical forum where I can shamble through the threads, reading them like articles in a newspaper. FB is more fast food.
I don't use my real name there because I don't like Zuckerberg's policy, it's just to keep in touch with old (real analog) friends and checking the latest news of kit manufacturers. I spent bonus time there, SPAM always comes first.

Re: An Invitation
I always refused to join Facebook. It is a new mood of a unnecessary time thief. If I want to know what´s up in the family or at friends I pick up the phone.
Back then when I was an admin on another place I won´t mention I was talked into opening a FB account, for the simple reason to promote this then place. But from the beginning I always refused to post pictures of me or my family, to post in public what is personal stuff in my eyes. Too many people on FB that obviously like to show their underwear in public...
Today I run my personal FB page and the SPAM FB page. But only to promote this forum, my friends at Zoukei-mura and this hobby. Again, no stuff I would not want to see printed in the papers.
Jim, I see you felt the need to have a dedicated place for your understanding of critique. That´s fine for me. But your "desire" to get critique is not what I feel and need from a place as this here. I enjoy to share my WIPs here for the idea of sharing. I am happy about any comment. If there is a simple "I like" I am fine. I don´t feel the "need" for getting or giving a critique to whatever is posted here. Mostly, when I see a build that´s interesting or a finished build I just drop in to follow it. That´s a part of getting fun for me. Fun is point numero uno for me. Critique is fine, but not the first thing I aim for. My five Cents. (Euro)

Re: An Invitation
Shit? You got shit? I don´t think so. What are you upset about, Jim? You only got different points of view. From me and maybe others. That´s simply and nothing else than to exchange thoughts on a public forum. To me expressing an opinion in polite and respectful way hardly can be called shit. But maybe that´s only me?JimD wrote:I do think it's fairly interesting that this is supposed to be the closest little "family" forum. Yet, it's the only one I've gotten shit for for posting links to my blog. It's also the only one I've gotten shit for for mentioning a FB group.
I also think it's funny people are complaining that a FB group would take up people's time here, yet there's no outcry over the few members here posting much more regularly on other forums.
You did not simply "mention" a FB at will. Remember it was you to start this topic under the title "An invitation"? That´s something different than just mentioning another place! Oh, listen, guys: I have another place you could come over to! Follow me!
You for sure would get "shit" in so many other places when doing so. Not here. You may call our comments shit. That´s simply not nice.
I am out of this here. As FB, it steals too much of my time.

Re: An Invitation
Jim, many folks here post regularly on other forums. I know that I do. The amount varies for me depending upon feedback. I know I tend to post more questions elsewhere due to a larger audience and the better odds for a response. That is just the nature of this site vs others. This is a small crew of active members. My WIPs are usually shared equally across whatever sites I post on- SPAM, FSM, So Cal AMPS, and LSP. I also invite people from other forums and actual face to face clubs that I am a member of to come check this place out.JimD wrote:I do think it's fairly interesting that this is supposed to be the closest little "family" forum. As far as "gotten shit" goes, well, those same members of the small group all chimed in to express or critique your invite as it was. Nothing more, nothing less. Nobody's feedback was more or less valid than another's. Some folks have in their experiences have seen favored sites wither and/or die due to FB competition. I cant argue with that. And I already explained my views regarding the posting of the link to your blog.
A good buddy of mine once told me, if you don't think your gonna like the answer, don't go asking about something. This is turning out a similar way. you put the feeler out, and it's not quite getting all the answers that you wanted or hoped for.

Re: An Invitation
I don't ever recall seeing anyone giving you shit for posting links to your blog. In fact, all I've seen are many people going to your blog to read it. Then they may make replies here about something you mentioned in your blog; but I've never seen; or ever given you shit about actually linking to it. Even when those replies posted here may have disagreed with something you posted in your blog they were posted here with the greatest of respect and dignity.JimD wrote:I do think it's fairly interesting that this is supposed to be the closest little "family" forum. I don't know how many others are posting "more regularly" on other Forums, you have not given any examples. I admit; I am a member of four other Forums, soon to be three; yet I post fairly equally in all of them, depending on the Threads that get started or responded to. It is far easier for me to post more regularly on all the Forums I participate in than it is for me to participate in Facebook. In Facebook; you have a constant influx of posts from all your friends on your friends list that pop up; as well as chat boxes that open up while you're perusing your group(s). There's also notifications from all the other groups you are a member of that pop up when someone posts on them. It's not like the Forums here where posts come less frequently; thus allowing you more opportunities to leave when you are ready to. Facebook is like trying to catch all the sports action on ten or fifteen TV's all showing multiple games from multiple sports being broadcast simultaneously. These Forums; and others, are more like sitting in front of one TV and watching a game until it either ends, or you lose interest and change the channel.
In closing, let me apologize Jim for giving you any kind of impression that I thought your links; your blog or anything else you posted was shit because I DO NOT think that at all. I did even commend you for following your call to help other modelers as much as possible by giving them a place to bring their models for honest and straightforward critiques in order to help them grow in this Hobby. I do have to say that; while you are upset at others posting elsewhere; as well as your conclusions of what others feel about critiques on these boards; I haven't seen you give much (if any) critiques of any of my work on my Threads. To be honest; I can't recall seeing a response from you on any of my WIP or completion Threads at least within the past year or two. I don't think I should have to go to a Facebook page with my work to get that kind of feedback from you since I ask for comments already here on SPAM where we both are participating.
I consider you a valuable and knowledgeable member of these Forums and you; among many members here, are the reason I keep coming back.
