Flat coat...on

Canopy masks...removed

Up next...need to dirty up the canopy glass a bit, sand the wheels a bit flatter on the bottom, run the nosegear brake lines. Well and lots more actually, but those are the immediate next steps.

Awesome stuff! How are you planning on fogging up the canopy?

Very, very thin Tamiya paint. Did similar with my Me 262 derelict:

Landing gear installed...made super-extra awesome by the 4.8 million small black beetles in the garage tonight, all of which were very interested in landing on me during delicate operations.

Getting very close now. Only a few bits and bobs to go before I can call this sucker done.

Last night I spent some time on the brake lines for the nosegear.

If I had to pick this kit's single weakest point, it would definitely be the landing gear. The detail is not all that great, the fit of the main struts is essentially a CA-and-pray situation, and on whole it seems a very clumsy execution compared to the superlative gear legs of Eduard's MiG-21 lineup (particularly their bronze legs). The Eduard wheels help a bit, but they're fiddly in their own ways.

FINISHED!

After 74 days on the bench, the Fishbed-C is finally finished, and I can now mark "build a jet" off the list.

Overall thoughts are that this is a very good kit in general. Downright excellent in places. Slightly less so in others. My main beef is with the landing gear - so-so detail overall and a lot of slack in the fit of the main struts. Also the stability of the thing...the struts are quite small in diameter and not beefy enough to eliminate wobble. Other big beef is the stabilators. The butt join to the fuselage is ridiculous. Drilling and pinning provides a way around, but I can't help but feel there's a more elegant solution. I should probably look at what Eduard did...

Thanks to everyone who's followed along on this one...looking forward to diving into my next jet soon. Stay tuned!
