F-104 aside, there obviously has to be a market out there for these beasts. Trumpeter has massively expanded the available kit selection in the past 15 years. Tamiya, Academy, Revell, and others have followed along bringing out other new subjects. Somebody is buying them and encouraging the kit companies to keep it up. Right?

I do stand by my notion that they are usually taken up by more "obsessive" builders. I think the larger the scale kits the more demanding it is for detail. You can get around a lot of skipped detail in 1/48..I don't think so much at 1/32...and the bigger the subject gets the more glaring some things are. I've gone through a couple 1/32 F-14 WIPs the past couple days that were so over ambitious that they fizzled out before getting anywhere close to paint. Maybe that's the problem with seeing completed 1/32 jets.

Well that's one point to ponder. Do model genres attract particular types of modelers with different personality traits? Are 1/32 jet modelers more obsessive and AMS than 1/48 or 1/72 jet modelers over the scope of effort or ambition of their projects? I know from being in AMPS as well as in IPMS that there tends to be a more prevalent type at AMPS for that specific genre of modelers, vs at IPMS with the all included modeler genres present there.

To me its NOT just space issues. Not that I don't have a lot of it---but I can fit a LOT more 1/72nd scale a/c in the same amount of space, and I also enjoy the small detail provided in that scale.

To me there's more fine scale modeling in the smaller scales than in the 1/32nd birds. I don't think model companies are reproducing most 1/32nd subjects to the detail the scale requires...to me, most builds I've seen in that scale seem somewhat toy-like ...

As Prof of Death wrote, everything becomes so much more open to omission and scrutiny in that scale...

Display space is indeed a major issue for these kits. And if you're building for contests detailing is another major consideration. Due to the size, you can see a lot more. And is molded on detail present, adequate, or needing to be replaced?

I'd agree to that in some extent - my Harrier has huge lacking in the deatil department, and would require a massive amount of work to get it to a competition level.

I do like 1/72 Jet kits, and really should buy some more modern kits as the deatil levels these days is superb! (perhaps we should have a small scale Jets Discussion...
