Like Borg, I go through the instruction sheet and write in the colors on the parts that need painting. That's about all the preparation I do, aside from checking to see if I actually have the colors I need....

That's what I normally do but lately I've been thinking about making something that's a little more quick reference like. I'm a Excel nerd and love making spreadsheets, maybe I can come up with something in Excel.

I did an Excel database with a new sheet for each brand of colours I have. Whenever I got new colours I add them to the respective sheet, or mark them there as "to be ordered".
I simply got tired looking through all the places where I have my colours stored, only to find that the colour I need isn´t in my stash...

Yeah I've been running into that problem over the past year. When we were stationed in North Dakota, all of my modeling supplies were in storage for a good two years or so. When we moved to DC I was able to start unpacking them. Over the course of a year when I would pull out paint I needed it was well...useless or when I thought I had a color but I actually didn't. It's been on my to-do list of going through everything and tossing out what's bad and making an inventory of what I got.

I need to do the same thing Harley. I did it a little bit ago, but not as thoroughly as I could have. I just keep trying to empty my bench of WIPs.

I keep track of all paints I have (and other similar / related stuff) in Excel, being also sort of an Excel nerd..

I check always there before going "shopping".. impossible to remember all those more seldomly used paints.

I don't necessarily have a system for paint. However, because I am only just getting back into the hobby with my son after a 40 hiatus I have to start from scratch ... Paint, tools, the whole nine yards.

Because the current project is self defined in color demand, I suppose the paint system too is predetermined. It's just that there are far more paint options available than when I was 10 or so. There are at least four note worthy brands all of which have their selling points and properties. I have settled on the Vallejo brand because of the ease in which I am able to cross reference to a military Specification number (FS 595). This makes painting military models much easier. and make them match far better in a realistic diorama setting.

I only use Vallejo to set some colour spots. They are great for detail painting with a brush. Never had too much success in airbrushing them...
