Stuart,,,,,,,,I know I am answering this on the wrong site. (this is the second site I read each internet session)
But, I just remembered you mentioning it, and just remembered the name of the paint.
If you can get a spray can of Krylon Fusion White, you can get around the problem of trying to brush paint White on a USN model.

Just use the following "cheats",,,,,,,use one of the very light gray primers, then brush paint your Light Gull Gray paint right up to your White demarcation area. Then after the Gray is hard, low tack mask off the Gray, and spray the Krylon White for the other half of your aircraft. Then go ahead and brush paint all of the little details. (if you use a light gray primer, you might only have to use one coat of brush painted Lt Gull Gray to get good coverage)

Another cheat would be to use the Airfix new tool Skyhawk, it is cheap enough, and good enough,,,,,give that thing some aftermarket decals and the clear of your choice, and you might have a beauty as your first USN jet model.

I so much agree with you about attempting to brush paint White,,,,,,,,,,those attempts are what pushed me to get an airbrush in the first place, way back in the day.

Portman, you aren't strange; I also love the old classic kits as well. I alternate between building something new and something old because I enjoy them just as much as you. Besides, building an older kit with not-so-good fitting and construction tends to help improve my skills for the newer mold models.

Thanks for the tips Rex - I'll hunt around and see if I can find some - Rattle cans seem the way to go.

It's a blooming pain that white, although I'm getting better results with the hairy sticks these days the white I applied to my Fury the other day looks awful. And if it looks awful on a Fury, there's no hope for the F-14A and RA-5 I have in the stash (and the Skywarrior I want if I even get one).

I do indeed have the Airifx A-4B in the stash and yes I agree it's a super looking kit. I also have a Resin pit and some resin TER/MER and mk.82's for it. I'd like to get my hands on a mk.7 for it but the Spectre ones are oop as you know.

I have built one USN Aircraft in High-Viz though - Airfixs ooold tool A-7E.





Not brilliant, but considering it had a 1lb bag of bread flour dropped on it which shattered the U/C it's amazing it's not in the bin. Please ignore the badly painted wepons fit - I just wanted to get it off the bench. I'll pull them off at some point and redo them.

I'm doing a bit of a mix now actually - On the bench I've two NT Airfix Spitfires (a mk.I and mk.24 for a GB), an Emhar Fury and a Matchbox Dassult Msytere - it's really interesting to see how things have evloved.. or not as is sometimes the case. Sufficed to say my most favorite is the MB Mystere - mainly as I'm building it for my son for easter (to play with - he doesn't eat chocolate).

Take a look at each side of the rudder,,,,,,,and tell me if my idea of making a resin replacement for that seems like a good idea. (it would sell for cheap, I'd hope)

I built one of those old Airfix Corsair IIs a longg time ago. It was "pre airbrush" so I used the USAF decals on it. Many won't believe this, but, back when Airfix, Revell and Hasegawa had the only 1/72 A-7 kits, the Airfix was the top dog.

Yes, it's the Emhar Fury (I also have the GP 1/48th kit but I screem everytime I'm brave enough to open the box) as i am indeed a 1/72er mostly. It's not a bad kit for what it is, but I'm intreaged about the rudder now so I'll take a look when I go home.

I added a S/B cockpit, intake and exhuast trunking and as it's a B I have some Bullpups for it. I'll need to S/B the targeting pod however.

haha, isn't that about the dumbest thing you've seen a company do to a kit?

For those that don't know, Emhar put the rudder ribs on one side,,,,,,,and left the other side baby smooth.

It is actually easier to make a new rudder from card and plastic strip, because it it really tough to put the ribs on the "scratched" side look just like the ones on the "fully done" side
