On the topic of modelling "on the cheap" when I was in college I definitely tried that: windscreen wiper fluid instead of Tamiya thinner, Tippexx/correction fluid instead of putty, cheap no-brand rattle cans etc. And worst of my experiments: trying to use every last drop of paint. Even if the carrier was hardned and the pigments where on the bottom.

It worked in being cheaper but the results where mediocre and cost me more time. Nowadays I do not try to save on building materials and this makes whole build a lot easier.

Myself, when it comes to paints, glues, thinners etc, that is not the first thing I am trying to save on.

I also use "branded" and therefore hopefully good products. I try to avoid mixing for example paint & thinners, in other words like Gunze acrylics with Ginze thinner, same for Revell, Tamiya etc.

Though, there is probably one product-type I don't buy and that those specific airbrush cleaning liquids..
I find them overpriced compared to careful cleaning the airbrush with other chemicals etc.

I only "cheap out" on two items....

1. Lacquer thinner...used only for cleaning the airbrush and clear coats. Found a cheap-ish brand at the local hardware store that gets the job done well....I guess it's more "practical" than cheap.

2. Clear gloss....I used to use MM Gloss Lacquer...but at $4 an ounce... I got a whole quart of Minwax gloss lacquer for around $8. Result are equal.

I also scratch build quite a bit of stuff, rather than buying a/m....but that's more for the fun/challenge of it, rather than "cheaping out".

the only "cheap" stuff I use is Bondo instead of tamiya putty, Future instead of gloss-coat, and scratchbuilding instead of aftermarket.

I tried getting a different enamel thinner at the paint store, but NOPE. Im gonna stick with testors thinner for testors paint, thank you.

Is there a particular brand of lacquer thinner you use?

Too many Walmartians?
