Does anyone know if glycerin can be used as a retarder in acrylics?

Yes, absolutely. Vallejo's retarder is nothing else than that.

For airbrushing Vallejo's Model Color Series you can use 33% Isopropyl Alcohol, 66% pure water and a shot of glycerin as thinner.
Works for the Air Series as well.

I just make use of their generic thinner to thin them...

Bought myself Vallejo´s own "Airbrush Flow Improver", also a retarder in my understanding. But so far I couldn´t notice a difference having added this product...

I'm not disputing you,but I thought mixing Vallejo and alchohol was a big no-no

Yep, thought so, too. But I checked it and it worked like a charm.
Think the low alcohol ratio (1/3rd) is the key.

I had model air white and black that I thinned with alcohol and it wound up looking like a booger.
